The History of ICL
The Institute for Conservation Leadership (ICL or the Institute) strengthens leaders, organizations, and coalitions or networks that protect and conserve the Earth. We help leaders make significant changes in themselves, their groups, or their alliances that allow them to have a bigger impact with their work.
Founded as an independent national nonprofit in 1990, the Institute began as a project within National Wildlife Federation in 1988 with support from the Pew Charitable Trusts. Over the years, our programs have evolved from a primary focus on training to a full range of programs and services. We are honored to serve a wide variety of local, state, regional, and national groups working on conservation and environmental issues across North America.
We typically use a mix of tools in our work with leaders and groups – including consulting, training, peer support, coaching, meeting facilitation and research -- to help support change and greater impact. We work primarily in regions or with specific constituencies across the United States and Canada.
