In 1999, the Institute for Conservation Leadership began a three-year program to help environmental and conservation groups build strong organizations. With generous support from the McKnight Foundation, the Institute developed a "Benchmarking Workbook" that guides groups through an organizational self-assessment process. The workbook helps them choose indicators, measure performance, and set goals for their organization.
Thirty-three groups that work in the Mississippi River basin completed the workbook. They also agreed to complete the workbook during the next two years. Institute staff collected workbook data from all of the groups during a phone interview. In addition, seventeen of those groups applied to participate in the Institute's Sustainable Organizations Program-intensive organizational assistance-and seven were selected.
