Bold Leadership
Our experience with thousands of leaders over 22 years tells us that bold leadership is what will see environmental and conservation non profit groups through this tumultuous economic time. What does a bold leader look like?
1. A bold leader is always in “scan mode.” They ask others for opinions, knowledge, and expertise. They make an effort to continuously connect with people.
2. They will take what they’ve learned from others and apply it to their work. They not only stick with what has consistently worked in the past, but they are proactive about new ways of doing things in an ever-changing field.
3. Bold leaders maintain a positive attitude. Optimism and enthusiasm are infectious. They know that one thing they can control in a tough situation is their attitude.
4. They share. A recession is not the time to be stingy with already tight resources. Collaboration and
working together with others are both things that a fresh leader strives for.
5. Finally, a bold leader does not allow themselves to get burned out. They strive for balance both within the workplace and out.
There are very few of us who embody all of these traits, but the more we strive for them, the better off our organizations will be. Bold leadership will help us reach our goals and visions. And that’s the only thing that can (and usually does) make a difference in the success and viability of our organizations.
