Board JumpStart

An On-Line In-Person Workshop to Re-Energize and Strengthen Your Board

Does your organization need a more effective board, but board members won’t attend workshops or invest time?  Do you think your board needs structural changes, or perhaps some new members, but you’re not sure how best to move forward?

At ICL, we’ve learned that successful board growth usually starts with a small group of board and staff leaders, who create a plan and then involve the rest of the board members.

So we’ve created Board JumpStart for organizational teams of two to four board leaders (and the executive director, if you have one) to map out the path to a stronger board.  Board JumpStart provides proven tools and one-on-one consulting, and best of all you and your team can participate right from your office, via conference call and a web connection.

Board JumpStart participants will:

  • Complete preparatory reading on how organizations and boards develop over time.
  • Participate in a two-hour web conference with up to four “leadership teams” from other organizations.  During the conference your team will share challenges, solve problems, apply the Institute’s tools, and create a plan for moving your board forward.
  • Receive a one-hour follow-up phone consultation with an Institute trainer.

What previous participants say about Board JumpStart:

"We literally used the Board JumpStart workshop as a jump start!  We participated just prior to our first actual meeting with a new board of directors with members from the founding board.  It provided a focused way to help in that transition and provided me as the new Executive Director with a model and a tool to help address future challenges. Less than four months after completing the Board JumpStart six-month action plan, have accomplished over half of the action steps identified and are well on our way to completing the remaining steps." - Gary Bloss, Susquehanna Greenway Partnership, Lewisburg, PA

"[Board JumpStart] forced us to get our leadership team together and lay out our actions for 2007." -Amy Beyer, Conservation Resource Alliance, Traverse City, MI

"AEC participated in Board JumpStart when we had just grown our board by 7 members. As a 40-year old organization, we had to take some time to reflect on our history and our future, on our strengths and on our weaknesses. Participating in Board JumpStart was very helpful for veteran and new board members and AEC staff. We also enjoyed learning from the other organizations that participated on the call." -Jenny Dorgan, Alabama Environmental Council, Birmingham, AL
