Freshwater Leadership Initiative

The Institute's Freshwater Leadership Initiative is an ongoing 5-year effort to provide organizational and leadership development support to groups in the Great Lakes region and in the Southeast United States. The goal of the Freshwater Leadership Initiative is to strengthen organizations whose work has an impact on restoring and protecting freshwater ecosystems. It is funded by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.

Activities in the Freshwater Leadership Initiative include:

Leading From Within

Two sessions of personal leadership growth and skill development over a six-month period. Applicants should be from organizations in the Great Lakes region or the Southeast United States that have an impact on watersheds. Read more about the Leading From Within program.

Subsidized Custom-Designed Training and Consulting

For individual organizations that want to focus on organizational assistance to address a specific need. In the past, organizations have used this service for strategic planning, fundraising consulting, board retreats, and many other uses. Priority will be given to organizations that:

• Have an impact on freshwater ecosystems
• Are engaged in building a coalition or other collaborative work
• Are experiencing a leadership transition
• Want to grow a more active board

Outreach and Short Workshops

The Institute will offer outreach and short workshops to leaders and groups of state and regional conferences or meetings. To schedule a session at your next conference or meeting, contact Peter Lane.
