Job Title:
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Function:
To implement the strategic goals and objectives of the organization. With the chair, to enable the Board to fulfill its governance function. To giver direction and leadership toward the achievement of the organization's philosophy, ission, strategy, and its annual goals and objectives.
Reports to: Board of Directors
Accountabilities:
Works with the Board to assure that the organization has a long-range strategy which achieves its mission, and toward which it makes consistent and timely progress. Designs, administers and evaluates a comprehensive program that will achieve those goals and objectives delegated to the organization's staff. Develops and recommends to the Board, an annual bedget for their approval and manages programs within those guidelines. Keeps the Board fully informed on the condition of the organization so that the Board can carry out its governance function. Serves as chief spokesperson for the organiztaion and thereby assures the organization and its mission are properly presented to various publics (for some, the president of the Board is chief spokesperson). Effectively manages the human resources of the organization.

maintains the "Water Shed", a visitor center, and field office; reviews, monitors and takes action on Forest Service timber harvest plans, is very involved in the ongoing effort to restore the XYZ River Delta.
Our Board is activist, and highly dedicated, with recent members and others who have participated since our founding. The ABC Organization is seeking an Executive Director (ED) to lead our work. In addition to the Executive Director. The ED reports to the Board of Directors, which includes an Executive Committee. The ED is responsible for overall staff supervision, record keeping, and the financial health of the organization. Fundraising is a major responsibility. We have substantial support and good relationships with several foundations, but we want to broaden our fund raising base. We have over 500 members, and would like to expand membership. Specific areas of expertise that would be desirable include foundation grants, major donor work, and membership development. Funding is currently available for technical, policy, and public relations work related to salmon restoration in the ABC Area, in cooperation with other conservation groups and a technical advisory committee. The ideal candidate would be able to undertake at least some of this work, and direct the rest of it. The current budget is about $150,000 per year.
Desired qualifications:
At least 3-5 years of work in a comparable organization Successful fundraising experience, including grant writing and large donor solicitation Experience in personnel management Excellent writing and oral communication skills Experience in working with a Board of Directors Personal dedication to environmental protection Public policy experience, ideally in river or watershed protection, forest management, or fisheries. Salary: $35,000-$45,000, commensurate with experience.

REGION-WIDE COALITION FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
The Region-Wide Coalition for the Environment, based in Anywhere, USA, is a 30-year old regionwide multi-issue environmental organization with high name recognition and respect among the public, media, and government officials. The Coalition plays a leading role in advocacy for clean airand water; preservation of parks, forests, open space and natural resources; safe, renewable energy sources; and other environmental issues at the federal, state and local levels.
The chief responsibility of the Executive Director, from which all other responsibilities derive, is the building of the organization– through enhancing credibility and visibility with the public and the media, increasing membership and volunteer participation, stabilizing finances and expanding the budget, and cultivating new and existing networks. The Executive Director's tasks include:
ADMINISTRATION: Responsible for coordination of all Coalition activity including supervision of staff, overseeing the office's operation and managing the budget. Builds the organization by creating opportunities for volunteer and member involvement, working with citizen groups that form around environmental issues, and developing and maintaining cooperative efforts with other organizations and institutions.
Works with Finance Committee to develop annual budget and with Development Committee to plan and implement effective fund-raising goals and strategies. Reports to the Board of Directors, attends all Board meetings and other committee meetings as appropriate, and prepares an annual report. ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES: Identifies matters of environmental concern, does necessary research, proposes Coalition positions, and devises strategies for educating and mobilizing members. Serves as spokesperson for the Coalition on environmental issues by acting as media contact or by finding an appropriate substitute. Reviews or comments on permit applications and other proposed activities or actions by governmental authorities. Helps generate public responses when needed. Represents the Coalition in media and other public appearances and by serving on boards, commissions, committees, task forces or working groups. Appoints a substitute when necessary. Attends Board and Environmental Policy Committee meetings and provides briefings on issues. Oversees legislative agenda by working with lobbyist to plan and implement political strategies. Helps draft legislation when needed. Develops strategies for having an impact on, and increasing the organization's influence with, elected and appointed government officials. Writes issues-related materials such as articles for the Alert newsletter, position papers and fact sheets, grant applications, press releases, and letters to the editor and op-ed pieces for local newspapers.
SALARY RANGE: $40,000-$50,000 depending on experience, plus benefits.
